Experience From My Sikkim Trip

Gurudongmar Lake

Hello, It’s been some time that I bought this domain and installed WordPress out of curiosity but never found anything to write about. But recently I have been to Sikkim and thought of writing about my experience which may help others to plan their itenary and for me, helping myself to make the setup useful πŸ˜›

So, it started off by my mom, who suddenly said, “Hey, it’s been a long time we have not done any trips, let’s go somewhere”. Yeah, I know she was right, I got really busy into my professional life and the rat race to make money. I always loved travelling and previously we used to go every year to some tour, but suddenly it’s been 2 years I started running after making money.

So thought of taking a week off and after going through few places I fixed on Sikkim. I always prefer Mountains over Beaches and I have never been to North East. So this was my chance to explore the beautiful state of NE.

Well, I better stay off from the details of Sikkim, it’s altitude and all etc. Who thinks about all these while planning for a trip? Well, if you disagree, then Wikipedia is there.

We all of us, in my family loves DIY Backpacker Tour instead of going with any Tour Operators. DIY is fun, starting form gathering all information, probable risks, scams etc. to fixing on destinations and everything. DIY allows me to do the tour in my own way instead of relying on someone else to plan my tour. Though there’s nothing wrong loving packaged tour, that eliminates all your headache. But we love DIY, as we don’t always go by fixed itenary, we may increase days at some destination if we like it.

It’s always better to catch a train at night, so that you can reach NJP (New Jalpaiguri) at morning and can go upwards on that day only. But due to my schedule we couldn’t do that so we started off our journey by catching the train at morning and reached NJP at around 7:30 PM. As it was too late to go further, so we stayed in Siliguri for the night and explored Hong Kong Market. Siliguri itself needs 2-3 days to explore, but we have been to Siliguri previously, so it didn’t matter much for us. Enjoyed the delicious Toasts and Half-Boiled Egg in Netaji Cabin. I always go there if I’m in Siliguri.

Teesta River

Next day early morning we took Shared Jeep to Gangtok. Shared Jeep’s are always available in Siliguri and NJP for different areas such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Gangtok etc. They have fixed rate, so no chances of being scammed. Right now, the cost of shared jeeps are 200/- for Gangtok and 150/- for Darjeeling per person. One can also go for private car but as you can guess it costs higher but is more comfortable. Private cars cost between 1500/- to 4000/- depending on the car you are hiring. The shared jeeps takes total 10 person (4 Back + 4 Middle + 2 Front), so it can be very uncomfortable if you are a bit fat and not much open minded. In that case I’d suggest to go for private car as once you start the journey you won’t be able to negotiate anything. If you are on a budget trip you can also go for 2 tickets to make yourself comfortable. We as backpackers, always prefer local mode of transport, that helps us keeping the cost within range and also to enjoy the local culture.

Sikkim Checkpost

Sikkim Checkpost

The cars of WB is not permitted to go beyond Deorali in Sikkim. So the cars from WB will drop you at Deorali Stand and from there you have to catch local cab to Hotel or M. G. Marg. The journey from NJP / Siliguri to Deorali is around 3.5 to 4 hours with a nashta break in between. Have your breakfast / tiffin over there with Tea or Coffee. Don’t forget to enjoy Momo which is served with cutney, as you are in the land of Momo’s. Also note that, in Sikkim they do not have any concept of Chicken Momo, Mutton Momo etc. It’s Veg momo everywhere. Though you may find some stalls at M. G. Marg selling Chicken Momo, but it’ll be rare, very rare.

If you can catch the cars going back, that came down from Sikkim to NJP / Siliguri, then you don’t need to change the car at Deorali. From Deorali it’ll be around 200/- to your hotel (depending on the location) or M. G. Marg. Remember that though these are Taxi, there’s no meter system in Gangtok. They have fixed rate for fixed distance for locals. So bargain it accordingly before the ride. Also, maximum 4 person is allowed in a cab, so if you are more than 4 person, then you have to hire more than 1 cab.

We stayed at Hotel Ma Yang in Gangtok, Development Area. It’s a bit far from M. G. Marg. Hotels in M. G. Marg will generally have higher rate, while on Development Area or Lal Bazar Road you will get cheaper options. From our hotel, shared cabs were available to M. G. Marg for Rs. 10/- per person so it was not a problem for us to roam around.

Hotels throughout the Sikkim are available on AMP (American Meal Plan) / EP (European Plan) / CP (Continental Plan). Ours was with AMP. Though it may seem first that with AMP it’s going to be on higher side, but ultimately at the end you’ll realize it’s not. In Sikkim, it works in a different way.

If you are not aware about the Meal Plan systems, below is the basic idea of all the Meal Plans.

  • AMP (American Meal Plan) – Room with Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
  • MAP (Modified American Plan) – Room with Breakfast, Lunch / Dinner
  • EP (European Plan) – Room only
  • CP (Continental Plan) – Room with Breakfast

AMP is generally preferred which serves Bengali Cuisine, rest you can be sure that you won’t be disappointed. Different dishes will be served in every meal. So rest assured dishes won’t be same on all the meals for all the days. One can also go for MAP if your itenary is something which won’t allow you to have Lunch at the hotel. You can also go for EP / CP if you want to try out local dishes. But beware that, in Hilly Regions everything gets closed at sharp 9 PM and food in M. G. Marg can be a bit costly with the ratio of quantity served.

Gangtok

Gangtok

Once thing I loved and amazed about Gangtok is, everything is well organized and it looks like planned city. First thing that amazed me as soon as I was entered Gangtok, is the Footpath and Footbridges. Here in Kolkata we do have footpath, but I never seen anyone to use that, instead peoples walk along the main road. Well how would they? footpaths are filled up with different stalls. But here in Gangtok, I was amazed to see, that everyone is walking along the footpath and using footbridges to cross the road. That way both the cars running along the road and the peoples walking, don’t interfere each other.

Way To M. G. Marg

Way To M. G. Marg

Next thing, I loved is, the organized Cab system. Like, cabs that bring you from Deorali to the City can only run along the same route and they cannot hop into short distance passengers or cannot run in different route. So the cab that runs within the city for short distance cannot hop into other passengers too. Each cab has the licence stucked on the front window which determines it’s route. Also, they have different Cab Stand (multistoried buildings) for these. Like the cabs that runs from Deorali to the Gangtok City have different stand than that of cabs running on short distance within the city or than that of the cabs going to North Sikkim or West Sikkim. Everyone have different stand with different set of Cabs.

After checking in to hotel and having lunch we took rest for few hours and went for a visit to M. G. Marg. Again, it was simply stunning. With the lighting and decorations everything seemed planned. Had some delicious Momo and Tea and walked around the Marg. It felt awesome in Chilly 5 Deg C. Well that’s what my mobile showed me πŸ™‚

Sikkim is one of the state for Spirit lovers. So don’t forget to buy Liquors / Beer. It’s a tax free state so prices are much lower than that of your hometown (if you are not coming from another tax free state). Branded Beers are available for 55/-. Local beer is available for 50/-. We bought Antiquity Blue and VAT 69 for 710/- and 1050/- respectively.

Low Price + Chilled Weather = Enjoy the drink.

Next day after breakfast, we left for 3D/2N North Sikkim tour (also known as Lachung – Lachen tour). Cab from our hotel to North Sikkim Cab Stand took 200/-. The Lachung – Lachen tour is generally available within 3000/- per person (everything inclusive i.e. Accommodation and Food). This tour comes in various forms and can be booked from your Hotel or in Tour Stalls in M. G. Marg or in Siliguri / NJP while catching the cab to Deorali / Gangtok.

The North Sikkim tour comes in various forms, such as

  • 2D/1N – Lachung with Yumthung Valley
  • 2D/1N – Lachen with Gurudongmar Lake
  • 3D/2N – Lachen – Gurudongmar Lake & Lachung – Yumthung Valley

All the above tour comes with accommodation and meal plan. You cannot deviate from this i.e. you can’t book hotel yourself. The reason is, at that high altitude you won’t find anything. The hotels are very basic, so keep your expectation low. Though, they are more of a Lodge rather than Hotel. You will be served Bengali Cuisine throughout your stay. These hotels runs depending on these tour operators in Gangtok. Each tour operator have collaboration with a particular hotel accordingly.

Let me warn you, that all of the North Sikkim tour is really hectic and tiresome. Specially the 3D/2N tour. Also you will be climbing at very high altitude (17,100 ft above sea level), so be prepared and plan accordingly specially if you have aged person with you.

Also note that, you need to fix the tour with you tour operator / hotel, a day before you are willing to take this tour and submit Photo ID Proof along with 4 Passport size Photos, as these places are situated in Indo – China border, getting permission is required for the same. If you are not Indian, then your permission will be very limited

INFO : North Sikkim Tours are available both in Shared and Private options. This is in terms of the vehicle. Accommodation will be private to you if you are travelling alone or in double sharing mode if you are travelling in a group. Shared Option is recommended for Budget Tourists, however please keep in mind that due to the hectic journey, this won’t be much comfortable though. Of course, if you don’t want to shell out 6X amount on private vehicle, you don’t have any other option.

North Sikkim being restricted region, you need Restricted Area Permit (Restricted Area Permit) / Protected Area Permit (PAP). On booking of the tour package, your tour operator would arrange the same for you on submission of a photocopy of Voter ID Card and Passport Size Photo for each member. And considering the current costing of the package (with both shared and private vehicle), this is the best option. Because getting the permit on your own is theoretically possible but practically very tough (because of local politics) and hiring a vehicle for the trip along with booking the homestays separately would cost you more than the package cost. So practically it’s not worth the effort.

But believe me, if you take this tour instead of all the obstacles, it’ll be your lifetime memory

Way To Chungthang

Way To Chungthang

Way To Chungthang

Way To Chungthang

We started at 11 AM and reached Chungthang at around 6 PM in the evening with a 30 mins lunch break in between. Gangtok to Chungthang is 6 Hours journey. From Chungthang the road gets divided to Lachung & Lachen. Generally Lachen is covered first and then Lachung. So after having some Momo and Tea in Chingthang, we started for Lachen again without wasting much time.

Note that, Chungthang is the last destination where you’ll get Mobile tower. So take your time to make any calls or surf internet if you needed to. After this point, only BSNL will work. So you’ll be out of coverage area for 2 days if your provider is not BSNL.

UPDATE (2018) : Airtel, Vodafone etc. works really great throughout Lachen and Lachung now. You can even access 4G Data. There’s no coverage at Gurudongmar, Yumthang and Zero Point though.

We sighed when we reached Lachen after around 1.5 Hours. Finally we were at Lachen at 7:30 PM starting from Gangtok at 11 AM. We checked in to the Hotel. It was -10 Deg C and what I loved is, as this sort of temperature stays throughout the year, all the hotel sells liquor. I sat with a Beer. After an hour or so, we were called for Dinner.

Way To Gurudongmar Lake

Way To Gurudongmar Lake

Next day early morning at sharp 3’O Clock in the morning we left for Gurudongmar Lake. We reached Thangu, the last village of Indo – Chinese Border at around 7 AM. It’s mostly covered with the military base so be ready to be amazed to see different Regiments, Armour, Tanks, Shelling Equipment’s etc. I felt proud when I saw how hard our Indian Army works to protects us throughout the year on -15 Deg C. I felt proud watching them how they sacrificed their life, their family and is always there standing on the border so that we all Indians can go to sleep without worrying.

“Jai Hind”

Gurudongmar Lake

Gurudongmar Lake

So finally at 7:30 we reached Gurudongmar Lake at 17,100 ft. Many of tourist felt ill due to low oxygen and started facing breathing problem. The hills looked awesome, it was like made of Gold. The beautiful and awe inspiring lake remains milky in color throughout the year. According to a legend, since the lake used to remain frozen most of the year, it was not possible to use its water for drinking purposes. When the Guru Padmasambhava passed by, while returning from Tibet, the local residents are reported to have approached him for providing source of water. The Guru obliged. A portion of the lake touched by him does not freeze in extreme winter. Since water of the lake is considered sacred, visitors carry the ‘blessed’ water in bottles.

  • Gurudongmar Lake 13100 Ft
    Gurudongmar Lake 13100 Ft

Don’t try to find logic or science within this story, but be amazed to see, how it’s not frozen at -15 Deg C when everything around it is frozen. πŸ™‚ Be amazed, to see the Hills, well the last hills of India.

While coming back to Lachen we had breakfast at Thangu and spoke to some of our Army mens regarding the border conditions. Finally we were back at Lachen again at 12’O Clock. Took rest and a nap for an hour and then we were called for Lunch. Taking rest for few mins we left for Lachung at 2 PM.

While going to Lachung, we had a break in Chungthang. Again we were back in coverage area, so made few calls back home to inform that everything is fine. We reached Lachung at 5:30 PM. Took rest for the evening as all of us were really tired after the hectic trip of 2 days, well still 1 day remaining. We were called for Dinner at around 10 PM and had a Beer afterwards and went off to sleep.

Yumthung Valley

Yumthung Valley

At 5’O Clock in the morning we left for Yumthung. Yumthung is famous for varieties of Rhododendrons and known as “Valley of Flowers”. Though as we took this tour in October, we couldn’t see any flowers there. Bad luck, we missed the natural beauty.

  • Yumthung Valley
    Yumthung Valley

It was around 7 AM, we thought of extending it to Zero Point. Generally Zero Point is not covered in the tour, but you can always negotiate with the driver. Don’t negotiate about Zero Point with the Tour Operator beforehand, as it requires permission which will raise the cost. Instead pay your driver 500 – 1000 bucks and ask him to take you to Zero Point.

  • Way To Zero Point
    Way To Zero Point

We reached Zero Point at around 9:00 AM. Finally after enjoying and playing a lot with ice bergs, we left for Lachung at around 10:30.

  • Zero Point
    Zero Point

At sharp 12’O Clock we reached Lachung, back to our Hotel again and left for Gangtok at 2’O Clock after having lunch and freshening up a bit.

Ahh…So finally we are back to Gangtok at around 7 PM. We all were really tired from this 3D / 2N North Sikkim tour. We planned for visiting M. G. Marg but we couldn’t, as we didn’t had any energy left. Got a beer ourselves and we soon hit the bed after dinner.

Next day Morning, we planned for Nathula Trip, but our hotel suggested to shift it next day, as it’d be really hectic for us as we were just from a hectic trip of North Sikkim. Well, yeah, he was right, so we shifted the Nathula trip to next day and planned for local sight-seen. After breakfast, we arranged a reserved 10 Point Half-Day Tour which cost us around 1000/-

There are many sight-seen packages like

  • 3 Point Half Day
  • 7 Point Half Day
  • 10 Point Half Day
  • 10 Point Full Day
  • Mixed Point

Points are fixed for all the tours unless you go for Mixed Point. For Mixed Point, you need to plan it yourself, what points you’d like to visit.

On our 10 Point tour, we went to Tashi View Point, Hanuman Tok, Ganesh Tok, Bakthang Waterfall, Enchey Monastery, Flower Exhibition Center, Handicraft Center, Chorten Stupa, Institute of Tibetology and Ropeway Cable Car.

  • Gangtok From Tashi View Point
    Gangtok From Tashi View Point

Well, we didn’t went to Cable Car as we didn’t think the price is justified for the timings. It’s just that, you’d be able to see the Gangtok from cable car. So if you have never been to cable car then this can be a nice experience. But we had ride cable car many times before. So this didn’t attract us.

I heard of Rumtek Monastery a lot, and I had planned to visit it from the very beginning when I started to research on my tour. But those are included in 10 Point Full Day tour as it was on the opposite side of all the above points. So, I thought of booking a 10 Point Half Day and then I’d try to negotiate directly with Cab driver as that would save the money and also I was not interested in other points of Full Day tour except Rumtek Monastery. So, as I had planned, we negotiated with our cab driver for 500/- and he agreed, as that amount will exclusively go to his pocket.

Finally, we were at Rumtek Monastery. What should I say, Awesome. Simply Awesome. Our driver was very friendly guide, he narrated us the story of the Monastery on the route.

After this, he took us to Botanical Garden, though we didn’t asked for it and it was closed too due to Diwali. And, with this, we ended our so called 10 Point Half-Day Tour (or should I call it 10 Point Quarter Tour :P) and back to our hotel.

Botanical Garden

We took a nap after having our Lunch and later in the evening we went to M. G. Marg. It was Diwali, and people were burning crackers all over and it was just stunning. Watching colorful shells in the mountain with Tea and Momo, is just different and awesome.

Next day, after breakfast, we went for Tsongmo Lake – Nathulla Pass – Baba Mandir Tour. This tour generally costs 800/- per head (With Nathulla), and 500/- per head (Without Nathulla). The first stop was Tsongmo Lake. I don’t know, but may be after all the scenic beauty of Gurudongmar and Zero Point, I didn’t find this much interesting. So we didn’t wasted much time here.

Tsongmo Lake

Tsongmo Lake

We had Thukpa as our lunch in a small jhoops near Tsongmo Lake and headed for Nathulla. Words can’t describe the feeling when you are standing in your country’s border watching the bunkers of India and China and the LoC. Just a step forward and you’ll be in China.

  • Way To Nathulla

While returning back from Mathulla, we visited Baba Mandir. Though the use of word Mandir which means Temple, it’s not a Temple actually. Baba Harbhajan Singh was an soldier who died near the Nathula Pass. He is revered by soldiers of the Indian army as the “Hero of Nathula” and the army men have also built a shrine in his honour. He has been accorded the status of saint by believers who refer to him as the Baba (saintly father). Many of the faithful people, chiefly Indian army personnel posted in and around the Nathula Pass and the Sino-Indian border between the state of Sikkim and Chinese occupied Tibet have come to believe his spirit protects every soldier in the inhospitable high altitude terrain of the Eastern Himalayas. As with most saints, the Baba is said to also grant favors presumably to those who revere and worship him.

And finally we were back in Gangtok again.

Mera Bharat Mahan

Mera Bharat Mahan

It was 11 PM, chilled weather with a Chilled Beer in hand watching the peaks. Last night of our tour. What can I say, I thought I’ll miss this place, the trip, the enjoyment. The friendly nature of all the Nepali people around who helped us a lot throughout this trip of ours.

Next day, we left for NJP after breakfast. Throughout the route, I kept my eyes closed and every details of our trip went through my mind. I was missing it badly. And more than that, I was afraid of going back to that so called rat race life again. But what can I do? That’s the way of life. Right? I kept telling my heart that, Let’s go back, earn more money, so that you can again pack the bags and leave for another awesome place again.

Memory

Memory

Last but not the least, this trip would not have been successful without

Thanks a lot to all the volunteers out there in Trip Advisor, who helped me a lot researching about destinations and various suggestions. DIY is fun, it helps us to be informed about the destinations and pick up them according to our choices, probable scams which helps us to keep our cost low avoiding them.

Any critics and suggestions is welcome.

Costs Involved:
NJP -> Siliguri : Reserved Auto = 200/- (For 5 Members)
Siliguri -> Deorali : Shared Car – 200/- Per Head x 5 = 1000/-
Deorali -> Development Area (Hotel) – 200/- per car. As we were 5 members we took 2 taxi’s. So total is 400/-

North Sikkim 2N/3D Tour : 3000/- Per Head x 5 = 15000/- (including accommodation and all the meals) + 1200/- given extra for Zero Point (Zero Point is not included in the package)

If you are planning to hire a private vehicle it costs around Rs. 16,000/- for 2 Pax and around Rs. 20,000/- for 4 pax including accommodation and all the meals.

Gangtok 10 Point Sightseeing : Exclusive vehicle for 5 members – 500/- + 500/- Given Extra for Rumtek Monastry = 1000/-

Nathulla Pass Tour : 800/- Per Head x 5 Person = 3200/-

Hotel Maa Yang @ 1200/- Per Day x 4 Nights = 4800/-
We, 5 persons, stayed in a single room. And this price includes MAP i.e. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner and Tea 2 times (Morning and Evening).

We were there for total 6 Nights, out of which 2 Nights we spent in Lachung, Lachen. So the Hotel Costs is of 4 night with all the meals.

As far as I remember, our total cost for the trip from Home to Home was 40k for 1 week for 5 persons. Ofcourse that includes too many Momo’s @ 30/- and Thukpas here and there.

Development Area -> M.G.Marg shared cabs take 10/- per head. But while returning from M.G.Marg you’ll never find a shared cab. So you need to book it exclusively for 80/- – 100/-. Depends on your bargaining. Some day we got for 70/- and some day for 90/-.

Contacts:
Hotel Maa Yang : +919748659918 / +919432491159

North Sikkim, Nathulla Pass and Sightseeing Tours booked from Lama Tour and Travels. It’s run by an young women, Binita Lama. You can call her or whatsapp her at +919832079292 / +919734983536. She has recently started her Hotel Business too in Development Area, Gangtok. Lamaz Residency : Lamaz Residency

We didn’t stayed there, as the prices were a bit high than our budget. We had a budget of around 1000/- for a room (for 5 people!!). Though she gave us a discount, still it was too high for us.

Sightseeing Driver [SK 01 T 1077] : +919734008523. Well I asked a lot but he didn’t told his name. Instead he kept on insisting by saving his name as Uncle. So I saved the contact as Uncle on my phone πŸ˜› He’s really a good driver and a guide himself. He told us the story behind Rumtek Monastry on our way.

    Hi Mr Krishnandu,
I have read you blog and its very good and helpful for us.
My name is Harshit and i am planning to visit and Darjeeling during April 20 to 23. Reaching njp on 20 morning with my wife going to celebrate our first anniversary.
    My tentative plan
Day 1(20 April)- NJP to Darjeeling and local sight seeing
Day 2-(21 April ) tiger hill and some other places and proceed for Gangtok.
Day 3(22 April) – nathulla, baba mandir etc
Day 4(23 April)- 10 point and back to njp.
Is this plan workable. Could you give some suggestion on hotel and travelling

Hi Harshit, Thanks a lot for your appreciation πŸ™‚

Comin to your itenary, I’d say stick to only single destination with 4 days in hand. As you are not enjoying either of the place with the mentioned itenary.

Like on Day 1 it’s not possible to reach Darjeeling and have a sightseeing. There’s no issue theoretically but practically all trains reach NJP after 8-9AM. So it’d take you another 3-4 hours to reach Darjeeling and all the sightseeing tour of Darjeeling starts post breakfast. Another sightseeing starts post lunch which is also not possible for you.

Again on Day 4, it takes atleast half day to cover Gangtok. So after doing sightseeing and having lunch you can’t proceed for NJP as it’d be too late by then. Generally cars don’t ply in hilly areas after evening.

And this way you are highly rushing from destination to another. So I’d suggest just to enjoy Darjeeling or Gangtok to its fullest instead of just sake of saying you have been there.

Regarding hotel and travelling, I can surely suggest you. But let me know which destination are you choosing.

        Hi Krishnandu Ji,
Thanks for your suggestion. I have now extended our tour by three days, reaching njp on 18 April morning.
        Now My tentative plan
Day 1(18 April)- NJP to Darjeeling and local sight seeing

Day 2-(19 April ) Early morning sightseeing trip to Tiger Hill, Batasia Loop, Ghoom Monastery and back to Mall / Hotel for breakfast. Post breakfast go for half day sightseeing tour. O/N at Darjeeling

Day 3(20 April) – Move to Gangtok in the morning

Day 4(21 April)- Full day trip to Tsongmo Lake, Baba Mandir, Nathulla Pass. O/N at Gangtok

Day 5(22 April) – Full day Gangtok sightseeing trip. O/N at Gangtok
Day 6( 23 April) – Gangtok to NJP

I also like to stay in budget hotels just like u. so now could u please suggest some hotels in darjeeling and gangtok. rest the details regarding natulla trip and sight seeing you have already enlisted in your blog. Thanks in advance for ur advise

Hi Mr. Harshit, I can personally vouch for The Revolver but it needs to be bookes well in advance due to the popularity and rush it receives. Though you can check with them once if it’s still available. Otherwise you may try Broadway Hotel (Not Broadway Annex), Highlanders Inn at Darjeeling.

For Gangtok there’s no issue. You’ll get a lots of budget hotel in M.G.Marg within 800/- to 1000/-. Else try on Development Area where you’ll get lots of budget hotels too!!

          Have a great holiday πŸ™‚

Hi Rohit, Thanks a lot for your appreciation πŸ™‚

I’m glad that you liked it πŸ™‚

If you reach NJP by 10AM then you’ll reach Gangtok by 1:30PM to 2:00PM.

Yes you have to submit the documents before a day of commencement of your journey. So you have to submit the documents the day you reach Gangtok.

Travel Agents procure the permits early morning of the day of your journey.

Hi Rohit, First of all I’m not any sir πŸ˜› So you can just call me Krishnandu or Krishnandu Da if you wish πŸ™‚

Well shared cabs ply form outside NJP Station (Near Prepaid Taxi Stand) or from Siliguri. It’d cost you 200/- per head from Siliguri and 250/- per head from NJP.

Small exclusive vehicles like Wagon R will cost you around 2200/- to 2500/-

Hi Mr. Pavan, Thanks a lot for your appreciation πŸ™‚

At Gangtok, you’ll get hotels for all range of budgets. So don’t worry.

Well, At Gangtok you might be able to find South Indian foods, though I cannot vouch for the taste, as preparation of South Indian food on North Indian style is always different from what you get in South Indian states. But at North Sikkim, it’ll very basic Rice, Dal, Sabji, Egg / Chicken.

Regarding vehicle, as far as my knowledge goes it won’t be possible to travel all 14 members in single vehicle. You might need to hire 2 vehicle. And also when I visited I found Sikkim following very organized regarding vehicles.

For E.g. vehicles for different areas have different registrations and color codes. Like vehicles permitted for Sightseeing at Gangtok are not allowed to go to North Sikkim or anywhere else and vice versa.

So even if you hire exclusive vehicle, I don’t think you can use same vehicle for North Sikkim, Nathula Tour & Gangtok Sightseeing.

Hope that helps. Let me know in case of further queries. I’ll be glad to help πŸ™‚

    Hello Krishnandu Da,

Awesome Blog, and it really helped me to choose Sikkim over Shillong.

Below is my itinerary, Please suggest if it’s OK.

18th May : Arrival at NJP and leave for Gangtok
    19th May : Gangtok Sightseeing
20th May : Nathula, Baba Mandir & Tsogmo Lake
21th May : Gangtok to Lachung
22nd May : Lachung- Yumthang -Lachen
    23rd May : Lachen – Gurudongmar Lake – Gangtok
    24th May : Gangtok – NJP

Please note we are 6 people travelling (4 Males & 2 Females).
    Question:
    1. Please suggest the budget from NJP to NJP (including Fooding Lodging &Sightseeing) considering the month we are travelling.
    2. Please confirm if it is OK to do the booking from Gangtok and not in advance.
    3. Please suggest the Cost only for Gangtok – Lachung – Yumthang.

    Thanks for help in advance.

Hi Imran, Thanks a lot for your appreciation. I’m glad that you liked it πŸ™‚

Your itenary is perfect. Given that Nathulla is closed on Mon & Tue you can correctly planned it on the first leg of your trip. πŸ™‚

      Now coming to your queries…

      1. Cost highly depends on how you are taking the tour and what kind of tour you are looking for. For e.g. what kind of hotels you want, what kind of food you are looking forward to have and how are you taking the transport such as whether you are using exclusive vehicle or shared vehicle.

I can provide you an idea if you are looking for budget solution. You can get budget hotels within Rs. 800/- – Rs. 1000/- easily. Fooding cost will be around Rs. 500/- per person per day if you don’t go for luxurious restaurants. NJP to Gangtok and Gangtok to NJP would be Rs. 250/- per person by shared vehicle. North Sikkim trip would be Rs. 3000/- – 3500/- per person including fooding and lodging. Trip to Nathulla, Baba Mandir & Tsongmo Lake would be 800/- per person. And an exclusive vehicle for full day sightseeing would cost you 1500/- to 2000/-.

So calculating all the cost including some miscellaneous cost it’d be around 40k – 50k for 6 people for 7 days.

      2. Well you’ll get a lot of hotels at Gangtok. So if you are keen on some specific hotel, then you can pre-book else rest assured you’ll manage to get rooms on spot.

      3. With Shared vehicle it’ll be around 1500/- per person including fooding and lodging.

Hi Imran, I’m not sure what kind of suggestions you are looking for. It’d be great if you can ask some specific questions.

I see that your itenary is perfect. Are you worried about the 13k per head? Yes that’s quite high if you are planning to travel on your own. But given that you are looking for packaged tour, it’s fine I guess.

If you are not interested in doing all the arrangements on your own, there’s very little you can do to save much. May be you can bargain with some other agents for 10k or something.

I’m not sure what kind of solution you are looking for, luxury or budget? So things depends on how you want to do your trip.

Let me know the details. I’ll surely help you out.

Hi Sid, don’t worry much, you’ll get lots of such shops at Thangu & Yumthang.

While going to Gurudongmar Lake, you’ll come across a village Thangu, where probably you’ll have breakfast. All the shops rents Boots, Jackets and all.

The same is applicable at Yumthang, parking area.

Hi Krishnandu, awesome informative blog man! It inspired me to write up blogs for my little experience about travelling.

By the way we are 2 families (2 women+2 men) planning to visit North Sikkim, and to visit the same want to spent some time in Gangtok.

We got an itinerary/quotation from a tour operator, like…

22nd May- ARRIVAL at GANGTOK hotels on MAPI as well as transportation to be organized.
23rd- GANGTOK – LACHEN hotels on MAPI as well as transportation to be organized.
24th- LACHEN- GURUDONGMAR hotels on MAPI as well as transportation to be organized.
25th – LACHUNG – GANGTOK hotels on MAPI as well as transportation to be organized.
26th- GANGTOK – SILIGURI transportation to be organized, After breakfast city sightseeing and transfer to Siliguri/NJP as per ticket timing.
The total Deluxe Package Rate is ?11700 /-Per Person for 4Pax.

    HOTELS:
    Gangtok – Hotel Isita International
    Lachen – Hotel Twin Peak
    Lachung- Hotel Highlander Hut

1Non A/C Vehicle will be provided.

    My Ques are:
    1) Are the hotels mentioned above good enough?
    2) Do you think the rate is okay?

Yes, I always believe in giving back to the community. I also take help of various blogs when I’m planning for some tour. So writing my own experience makes me feel like helping peoples like myself for planning their tour. You should definitely start writing.

      Now coming to your questions…
      1. Well I really don’t have any idea. Because there are thousands of hotels in Gangtok and to keep a track of same is almost next to impossible. So I’d suggest you to look up for reviews at Trip Advisor.

A simple google search lead me to it’s website and facebook page.

      https://hotelisitainternational.in/
      https://www.facebook.com/Hotel-isita-international-990026831019806/

You can check the view of rooms to judge.

Regarding Lachung and Lachen, I’d say hotels there at North Sikkim are very basic and offers basic amenities. So don’t expect much. You’ll love the homestay kind of experience. But if you get some good hotels it’s your luck.

      2. Well, generally I travel on my own to keep the cost low. But considering you are booking packaged tour, I think the rate is fine considering it’s high season.

I’d suggest you to check the rates with different tour operators before committing.

    Hey Krihnendu,
Thanks a lot for ur valuable reply. Surely I will start writing up to help our fellow traveler friends. Also I am a car enthusiast, so planning to write up regarding that also. To help buying car and etc..
Anyway.. Actually I searched in TripAdvisor regarding the hotels, but dint find any good result. But its really good that you are helping me my searching in google.. :-). Han, I have already sent mails to different operators, got back from Maple also along with the mentioned above. Maple has quoted 23000 & 20000 per person for 4 PAX for deluxe & standard package respectively. Isnt it bit on higher side? I also asked the same to them, they are asking my price. There I got confused. What rate shall I tell them?

And, yes I also love to make my own plan, but actually we are coming from Hyderabad, will stay in Kolkata for couple of days and will make a trip to Sikkim. All in just 7-10 days. So wanted to leave this to a packaged tour this time. πŸ™‚

    Cheers!

Well tes the prices are exhorbitantly high. But ofcourse that depends on what kind of hotels and car they are providing.

If they are providing 3* hotels and innova like car then the price is justified.

So please try to get the details. If you are looking for budget or standard solution then it shouldn’t be more than 10k – 15k

    Hello Krishnandu,
If I make changes in itinerary like following:

22nd May- ARRIVAL at Shiliguri & transfer to Gangtok.

23rd- GANGTOK – LACHEN, spent evening at Lachen.

24th- LACHEN- Thangu – Chopta valley- GURUDONGMAR & back to Lachung

    25th – LACHUNG – Yumthang- Zero Point – Katao – GANGTOK.

26th- Morning : GANGTOK Small city trip (guide me for the best places) ; Afternoon: transfer to SILIGURI.

    or

    25th – LACHUNG – Yumthang- Zero Point-stay over lachung

26th: early morning to KATAO- Lunch at Lachung – Transfer direct to Siliguri

Will the 25th & 26th work like this or it will be hectic?
And also I want to know, if I book hotel myself, and just want to book car from travel agent then how much would be the rate?

Hi Pralay, 2nd option is not possible theoretically and practically too.

You can go for the first option but you wont be able to cover much sightseeing places and you’d have to leave for Siliguri

Still if you had to choose then you can go for 1st option.

From all the sightseeing places I liked the Rumtek Monastry. Then you have Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, Botanical Garden, Chorten Stupa, Ropeway, Hanuman Tok, Ganesh Tok, Seven Sisters Waterfall etc.

Regarding the rate, it depends on what kind of hotels you are looking for. You’ll get Hotels starting from 800/-.

Regarding car, it depends on whether you are going for shared vehicle or exclusive vehicle. For exclusive vehicle it depends on what kind of vehicle you are hiring.

Below are some approx idea for shared vehicle
      1. North Sikkim – 3000/- per head including fooding and lodging.
      2. For Nathulla, Baba Mandir, Tsongmo Lake – 800/- per head.

For exclusive vehicle North Sikkim tour would be around 15k – 20k for 2 persons including fooding and lodging. I’m not sure about excusive behicle rate for Nathulla, Baba Mandir & Tsongmo Lake.

For half day sightseeing trip it’ll be around 1500/- for full vehicle.

Update: Actually maple had quoted wrongly, they rectified it. And after negotiation, they agreed for 23000 for 4 pax.(Gangtok to Gangtok) , Siliguri transfer extra.
I have asked about Katao as well, as you said the 1st option is feasible enough. Driver will charge extra.
In fact we are planning for white water rafting on Teesta while returning from Gangtok to Siliguri.. lets c.

Just do let me know one thing, is there any chances of rain during the time I mentioned? I just got this info from one of my friend, that it can happen sometimes. What you say?

Hi Madhavi, The itenary looks fine.

I do not understand your question “Basically this is a camp.. are we missing something …?”. Can you please elaborate or rephrase it?

Yes, May is great time to visit Sikkim. In fact I’m also going to South & West Sikkim (Okhrey, Hilley, Barsey, Kaluk, Richenpong, Uttarey, Hee Bermiok, Chaya Taal, Pelling, Borong, Ravangla & Namchi) next week.

Well regarding costing, it depends on how are you doing your trip. What I mean is, what kind of vehicle you are hiring, what kind of hotels you are booking and what kind of food you are using.

If you are looking for a packaged tour, I think this is fine. Though you may bargain a bit more to get it at 10k per head.

Hi Madhavi, Well, it completely depends on what exactly are you looking for.

I’d suggest you check out Okhrey, Hilley, Barsey, Kaluk, Richenpong, Uttarey, Hee Bermiok, Chaya Taal, Pelling, Borong, Ravangla & Namchi.

You can leave out Okhrey, Hilley, Barsey if you are not interested in trekking.

But your plan is also fine. See, to tell you the truth, I can’t suggest you places. Because I don’t know what kind if trip you are looking for. Do you want to see mountains with snows or get soaked in to the lap of mother nature or enjoy the city life.

So it completely depends on you.

Though from the list of places I suggested you to check, you are covering almost all the places except Kaluk which I urge you to check out Kaluk and a day trip to Uttarey.

But you may need to either change your itenary or increase one more day.

      Hi Aninda,
First of all sorry for the late reply. I’m travelling in South & West Sikkim with limited access to internet connectivity. Well with the number of days you have in hand you can easily have a relaxing trip.

      What you can do is…

21st : Reach Gangtok and stroll around M G Marg in the evening.

22nd : Go for half day sightseeing trip and return back to hotel within afternoon. You can stroll around the M G Marg in the evening and book your North Sikkim trip.

      23rd – 25th : Take the 2N/3D North Sikkim trip.

26th : You can keep the day for rest as you’ll be tired after long and hectic North Sikkim trip.

27th : Go for Tsongmo Lake, Baba Mandir, Nathulla Pass

      28th : Return to NJP

Hi Tara, First of all I’m sorry for replying a bit late. I was travelling across West and South Sikkim.

Now, coming to your question, it’s really hard to tell whether it’s a good deal or bad. It depends on what kind of trip you are looking for.

For exclusive luxury trip it’s okay, but for a budget or mid-end trip, it’s way too high.

But as I said, it depends on what kind of vehicle you are hiring, what kind of hotels you are staying at.

Hi Isa, First of all I’m sorry for replying a bit late. I just returned from my trip to West and South Sikkim.

Well don’t get disheartened, though you really have number of days to explore the best of Sikkim, but the timing you have choosen is really wrong.

The time you will be visiting Sikkim is monsoon season and Sikkim being landslide prone zone I can’t suggest you places like North Sikkim or East Sikkim.

So you have to restrict yourself to places like Gangtok, Kaluk, Pelling, Ravangla, Namchi etc.

You can follow the below itenary.

    19th : NJP to Gangtok.
20th : Gangtok Full Day Sightseeings
    21st : Gangtok to Kaluk.
22nd : Kaluk to Pelling via Rinchenpong
    23rd : Pelling Sightseeing.
24th : Pelling to NJP via Ravangla and Namchi.

Let me know if this looks okay to you.

Hi Isa, Passport will be okay as far as I’m aware. But not sure about PAN and DL as both of them doesn’t have any Address proof. Even all the tour operators asks for either Voter ID Card or Passport.

I’d suggest you to check with few of such operator for exact information.

Regarding students (below 18 years old) they accept School ID Card.

Hi Priyanka, First of all I’m not any Sir. So you can just call me Krishnandu.

      What you can do is…
Day 1 : NJP to Darjeeling. Stroll around Mall in the evening. O/N at Darjeeling.

Day 2 : Early Morning Sunrise Trip to Tiger Hill, Ghoom Monastry, Batasia Loop. Post breakfast go for full day Darjeeling Sightseeing. O/N at Darjeeling.

Day 3 : Darjeeling to Gangtok. Stroll around M. G. Marg in the evening. O/N at Gangtok.

Day 4 : Full day Gangtok Sightseeing.

Day 5 : Day Trip to Tsongmo Lake, Baba Mandir and Nathulla Pass (if possible).

Day 6 : Gangtok to Kaluk. O/N at Kaluk.

Day 7 : Kaluk to Pelling via Rinchenpong, Hee, Bermiok, Chaya Taal and Uttarey. O/N at Pelling.

Hi Chandresh, Your plan for 25th, 26th and 27th May is wrong.

    1. It’ll be around evening when you’ll reach Gangtok from Lachung. So you can’t move to Pelling on that day.
    2. So if you go to Pelling on 26th May, you’d require another whole day for Sightseeing at Pelling. You can’t move to Darjeeling on that day after doing sightseeings. Otherwise you’d have to miss few points.

    So what I’d suggest is…
21st May : NJP to Gangtok. O/N at Gangtok.
22nd May : Day Trip to Tsongmo Lake, Baba Mandir, Nathulla Pass.
    23rd – 24th – 25th May : 2N/3D North Sikkim Package.
26th May : Gangtok to Pelling via sightseeing Singshore, Uttarey etc.
27th May : Pelling Full Day Sightseeing. (Rimbi Falls, Rimbi River Orange Garden, Kanchenjunga Falls, Kecheopalri Lake, Pemyagtse Monastery, Rabdantse Ruins)
28th May : Pelling to NJP.

Yes go for shared point to point transport and budget hotels that will keep your transport and accommodation cost to minimum.

Let me know if you need help with anything else.

    24 may lachen
    25 lachung

    27 may nathula pass… n sideseeing
    28 may departure for njp

Hi Chandresh, This way you are missing on both Darjeeling and Pelling. If you have not been to either of them I’d say leave one of them. Otherwise you have to visit both of them again to cover the place.

By starting early from Darjeeling you are missing on sightseeing points of Darjeeling and by moving on to Pelling just for a night stay you are missing all the sightseeings. So whats the point of moving to Pelling just for night halt?

Again for 27th, you can’t club Tsongmo Lake, Baba Mandir, Nathulla with Sightseeing. As Tsongmo Lake, Baba Mandir & Nathulla requires one full day and sightseeing cab be of either half day or full day depending on number of points you will be visiting.

Well, You just can’t compare places like that. Both Darjeeling and Pelling are beautiful. But I’d recommend to stick to Pelling as it’d be nearer from Gangtok.

So with exclusive car, you can cover Singshore Bridge & Uttarey on the way to Pelling.

Hi Chandresh, It all depends on weather. You have to decide it on spot based on whether monsoon has just hit north sikkim.

I suggested the same to Priyanka because, I just returned from South & West Sikkim on April. And it started raining heavily around Pelling. We were stuck around Pelling for 2 days for such bad rain.

But as per my knowledge, North Sikkim is fine as of now. But again, everything depends on weather and you have to decide it on spot based on weather report.

Hi Alapan, Thanks a lot for your appreciation πŸ™‚ I’m glad that you liked it.

Well you can follow the below itenary…
25th Dec : Reach NJP and transfer to Gangtok. Stroll around M.G.Marg in the evening. O/N at Gangtok.

      Plan 1 :
26th Dec : Full day Gangtok sightseeing trip. O/N at Gangtok.
27th Dec : Take rest for the day. Explore Gangtok on your own or do some marketing if you wish to.
28th Dec : Day trip to Tsongmo Lake, Baba Mandir & Nathulla Pass.

You have to make the Day trip to Tsongmo Lake, Baba Mandir & Nathulla Pass on 28th only, as Nathulla is closed on Monday’s and Tuesday’s. So 26th and 27th being Monday and Tuesday, Nathulla will be closed.

      Plan 2 :
      26th – 28th Dec : 2N/3D North Sikkim Trip (Lachen – Gurudongmar – Lachung – Yumthung – Zero Point)

29th Dec : Gangtok to NJP. Deperture.

Well, December is certainly a good time to visit Sikkim, but not North Sikkim. As road to North Sikkim starts closing on December. But that completely depends on weather.

So I have suggested you two Plans. So that you can take decision on spot on 25th after reaching Gangtok, about which Plan you’d like to follow based on Weather.

Day to day cost will depend on you completely. If you take it budget way, it’ll be like..
      Food : 500/- x 2 (Per Person) x 5 (days) = 5000/-
Hotel : 1500/- x 5 (days) = 7500/- Though December being off season you can manage to get hotels within 1000/-. But for now lets calculate it according to 1500/- per day, as that’s the minimum rate for clean and decent hotels.
      NJP to Gangtok & Gangtok to NJP Shared Cab : 250/- x 2 (person) x 2 (Both way) = 1000/-

      Now for Plan 1 :
Gangtok Full day sightseeing : 1500/- to 2000/- exclusive vehicle.
      Tsongmo Lake, Baba Mandir, Nathulla Pass : 800/- x 2 (person) = 1600/-

      Now for Plan 2 :
      2N/3D North Sikkim : 3000/- x 2 (person) = 6000/-. This includes all fooding, lodging and transport for 2N/3D.

Cabs from WB are allowed upto Deorali. After that you have to hire taxi to M.G.Marg. Private taxis cost 200/- and shared ones costs 10/- per person.

      Hope that helps. πŸ™‚

Will it be roaming over there for our mobiles?

Up-to where we can get ATMs.?

Do you suggest to go for the hotels at Development area, as you stayed?

Hi Alapan, Below are answers to your questions…

From where we will be able to see K2?
          A. Sorry. I’m not aware.

Also, if we get to go for 2N/3D N. Sikkim tour (which I am hoping most); then do we need to keep booked our hotel @ Gangtok for all the 5 days then? I mean what is the arrangements with the hotels then in case people are going for those tours?
          A. Not really. But it’s upto you. What we did was, we didn’t had bookings on those days of North Sikkim Tour. But we didn’t carried all our luggage due to obvious reasons. So we requested hotel staff to keep them in some safe room or store room if possible. As we had further bookings there only after returning from 2N/3D North Sikkim tour. They happily agreed and asked us to lock the luggage and kept the luggage in store room.

Will it be roaming over there for our mobiles?
          A. Yes.

Up-to where we can get ATMs.?
          A. You can easily spot ATM’s at and upto Gangtok.

Do you suggest to go for the hotels at Development area, as you stayed?
          A. Totally depends on you. We went to Development Area, as we were getting lower priced hotels there instead of M.G.Marg. If you have a good budget of 1200/- to 1500/- you’ll easily get hotels in M.G.Marg too. But we were looking for something less than or within 1000/-.

Sorry for bothering you so much.
Not at all..!! Always happy to help πŸ™‚

Would request a help here. We are also a group of 5 adults and we want to travel to Gurudongmar lake (this month itself) from Gangtok, making an overnight halt at Thangu (Gangtok-Thangu night halt-Gurudongmar lake and back to Gangtok. We would prefer to keep costs low. Could you tell us how much the taxis (shared, if available) would charge for a trip like this (including halting charges)? Also, do you know if any accomodation (homestays/basic lodges) is a available at Thangu? Thanks!

      Hi Sumit,
Shared cabs to North Sikkim are available for 3000/head. That includes fooding, lodging and traveling.

There’s no option to stay at Thangu. So you have to halt at Lachen only.

Also let me inform you, that trip to North Sikkim comes in two form – 2N/1D which includes both Lachen (Gurudongmar) and Lachung (Yumthang) and 1N/2D which includes either Lachen (Gurudongmar) or Lachung (Yumthang) based on your choice.

The trips to North Sikkim are like packaged tour. Though it’s not like you can’t do the tour on your own but if you try to do that you’ll have to face a lot of hassle getting the permits as no one will co-operate with you. Tour Agencies union there at Gangtok bribe the govt. officials highly and have created such situation.

So in simple words you have to hire a packaged tour for North Sikkim from one of the tour agencies unless you don’t mind running after govt offices for days.

So trip to North Sikkim always comes in as packaged tour. You can opt for exclusive or shared tour as per your wish. Remember that in shared tour you only share the vehicle, not the accomodation.

1N/2D tours costs around 1500/head in shared vehicle. And 2N/3D tour costs 3000/head in shared tour.

Again, remember that all tours includes fooding, lodging and travel cost. All the accomodation in north sikkim are homestay and very basic so there’s no point in choosing one over the other. And you are also not given much choice here. Every travel agent have their own setup with their preffered accomodation and you have to stay there only.

But recently few good hotels are coming up, so some agents do provide you choice if you go for exclusive vehicle.

Otherwise if you are keen on some specific hotel, then you can also contact them directly, they can alsp arrange the packaged tour via their operator in Gangtok.

Presently is lightly raining now. Well considering your heart problem you should definately avoid Lachen/Gurudongmar. But you can definately go for Lachung/Yumthang but avoid Zero Point.

Both Gurudongmar and Zero Point is at very high altitude and due to low oxygen you may have more problem due to your heart condition.

      Hi Anirban,
Weather will be perfect (mild cold) at Gangtok in October. But you’ll ofcourse need winter clothes.

I don’t suggest North Sikkim with a 2 and a half year old due to very high altitude and low oxygen. Though you may try Yumthang as it’s just 14k ft above sea level. But definately avoid Zero Point, Gurudongmar Lale and Nathulla.

Dada, had a query!! u told that WB registered vehicles are not allowed after Deorali stand..so will a SK registered vehicle take us to hotel directly from Tenzing Norgay bus stand [as we are reching Siliguri from Kolkata by Royal Cruiser] ??

Hi Soumik, Actually vehicles from other states are not allowed to ply in Sikkim. For Gangtok the checkpost is Deorali.

Yes, if you can catch the SK registered vehicles (those who come to NJP or Siliguri to drop tourists) then they can directly drop you at M.G.Marg or hotel with no extra cost.

    Dada our trip itinerary :

    31.5 : siliguri to gangtok.
    01.6 : gangtok-tsomgo-baba mandir-nathula-gangtok
    02.6 : gangtok-north sikkim
    03.6 : north sikkim
    04.6 : north sikkim-gangtok
    05.6 : gangtok- siliguri.

We are gonna take share taxis for siliguri-gangtok-siliguri, stay in development area and would opt for LAMA tours and travels for 2N/3D north sikkim trip. As we are budget travelers,we would like to avoid unnecessary money drainage on hotels, vehicles and north SK package..

    now, my questions are :

    1. Is the itinerary looking nice ??

    2. considering our itinerary, what according to u should be the trip expenditure, roughly, calculating from siliguri to siliguri??

    Please help..
    Regards.

      Hi Soumik,

      1. Yes, it’s perfect.

      2. Depends on how many number of persons you are. We were 5 pax and our Siliguri to Siliguri cost was 33k with one more day.

Well then it should be within 35k to 40k max. Though that depends on where you people take your food.

We had normal bengali food on all the days.

that means 7k-7.5k per head [siliguri-siliguri] will be sufficient as per our intinerary..

End of queries as of now..but will remember You again if any query arises..ok??

    thanx a ton Dada..

Hi Soumik, Ohh yes I completely forgot to inform you that I heard the news last week. Route to Nirth Sikkim got cut off due to rain and many tourists are already stranded there.

You may explore South and West Sikkim…

Day 1 : Siliguri to Gangtok
      Day 2 : Gangtok Sightseeing
Day 3 : Tsongmo Lake, Baba Mandir, Nathulla
Day 4 : Gangtok to Pelling via Ravangla
      Day 5 : Pelling Sightseeing
Day 6 : Pelling to Siliguri

Haha Thanks a mot Soumik πŸ™‚ That’s so nice of you πŸ™‚

BTW I actually missed the dates when you shared your itenary. I’d never suggest North Sikkim on Monsoons. It’s too risky. Suppose everything grts operational and out of luck you reach there too.. And god forbid if the road gets cuts off due to high rain you all will be stranded there.

Think again before planning it with a risk…

Yes, if you had one more day, I’d hve suggested one night stay at Ravangla too!!

BYW let me inform you when I visited there in April, it was also raining. So you’ll also get monsoon there too.

Dada,we are tight on schedule..so can’t halt at ravangla..!!as we are 6 friends on the trip,so isn’t much of a problem if we miss out on any spot..sitting back in the hotel room, enjoying the hills, monsoon, beer and momos, recollecting the college days’ memories, playing guitars, singing songs together is also something we are gonna enjoy to the fullest..if the weather, roads are clear, we will call it a TRIP and if roads are blocked, weather is bad and we are not able to go as per our itinerary and had to sit back in our hotels in gangtok/kalimpong , we will call it a get-together..

    sounds good??

Hi Aniruddha, I don’t think Febuary is a good time. Even though weather is highly unpredictable in hills but chances are road to North Sikkim would be block in Feb.

You may try in March / April instead.

    Hi Krishnandu Sarkar,

Your blog is great! I am planning a trip to Sikkim on 30th may till 4th june. I was looking foward to my North Sikkim trip, however due to the monsoons and the broken bridge, I have planned an alternate itenary.
We would like to visit Pelling, Richenpong,Ravngla,Uttarey or Okharey-Varsey-Hilley.
Which one these routes will you advice? Since its rainy season , I dont want to risk anything as we have a Bhutan trip planned further.
Also, Is it going to be very cold and should we pack any wollens accordingly?

Please advice on the places you think are suitable to visit now. Have you visited Bhutan? If so, can you share any tips as well.

    Thanks
    Aditi
